Pagadian City officials inaugurated a municipal banana tissue culture laboratory in Barangay Macasing on Wednesday, establishing what regional authorities describe as the first fully functional facility of its kind in the area. The laboratory will provide local banana farmers with disease-free propagated seedlings, addressing longstanding challenges related to crop health and yield consistency.
The tissue culture technology enables rapid propagation of banana plants from healthy parent stock, reducing the transmission of diseases that have historically affected banana cultivation in the region. By producing certified disease-free planting materials locally, the facility aims to lower production costs and improve accessibility for smallholder and commercial growers.
Local government officials positioned the laboratory opening as a turning point for Pagadian's agricultural development. The initiative reflects regional efforts to modernize farming practices and enhance competitiveness in the banana export sector, a significant income source for Zamboanga del Sur.
The facility is expected to support both food security objectives and income generation for farming communities in and around Pagadian City. Officials indicated the laboratory will operate under local government management, with plans to distribute tissue-cultured banana plantlets to registered farmer associations and individual cultivators.
