The Pahang Fisheries Department has submitted visual evidence of a fish suspected to be a red-bellied piranha discovered in Klau Dam to the Institute of Pesticide and Environmental Toxicology (IPP) for expert verification.
The submission follows an investigation initiated by the department after claims emerged of an unusual fish species appearing in the reservoir. Video clips and photographs documenting the specimen have been compiled and forwarded to specialists for definitive species identification.
A confirmed sighting of an exotic piranha species in Malaysian waters would raise questions about the fish's origins and potential ecological implications for the dam's ecosystem. Authorities have not released further details pending the completion of the verification process.
