Pahang records 16 drowning deaths as authorities warn of water safety

KUANTAN, Sept 14 — The Pahang Fire and Rescue Department has renewed its appeal to residents and visitors to exercise caution around water bodies and respect safety warnings, as the state grapples with a mounting toll of drowning deaths.

According to departmental records, 16 drowning fatalities have been documented across Pahang in 2024, prompting officials to intensify public awareness efforts. The deaths underscore the persistent dangers posed by rivers, lakes, and coastal areas, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall and strong currents.

Authorities have emphasized that warning signs installed at high-risk water bodies are placed there for public protection and should not be disregarded. The department urged swimmers and water users to verify water conditions before entering, avoid swimming alone, and refrain from water activities in areas marked as unsafe or out of bounds.

Officials also recommended that the public wear life jackets when engaging in water-based activities and familiarize themselves with water safety protocols. The Fire and Rescue Department pledged to continue monitoring water bodies across the state and conducting rescue operations when necessary.
