The victim, a retired educator from Pahang, fell victim to the scheme after encountering investment advertisements on TikTok that promised substantial financial returns. The fraudsters operated a sophisticated operation, creating a veneer of legitimacy that convinced the retiree to transfer substantial sums over several transactions totalling more than RM1.1 million.
According to the complaint filed in Kuantan, the scammers initially presented themselves as legitimate investment managers offering cryptocurrency or forex trading opportunities with guaranteed profits. They maintained communication with the victim through various messaging platforms, providing false transaction confirmations and account statements to sustain the deception.
The scheme unravelled when the victim attempted to withdraw alleged profits and discovered that neither the investment platform nor the promised returns existed. Attempts to contact the fraudsters subsequently proved futile, prompting the retiree to lodge a police report.
Investigations into the matter are underway as authorities work to identify those responsible for the scam. The case adds to a growing number of investment fraud incidents targeting vulnerable individuals through social media channels across the region. Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution when encountering unsolicited investment opportunities online and to verify the credentials of financial service providers through official regulatory channels.
