Pahang Sultan calls for tighter border security and refugee policy review

Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah has called on Putrajaya to conduct a comprehensive review of border security measures and the operational framework governing refugee management within the country. The Pahang ruler expressed concerns about the effectiveness of current border controls, signalling that enhanced security protocols may be necessary to address cross-border challenges.

In particular, Sultan Abdullah suggested that the government should evaluate whether the UNHCR, which has maintained operations in Malaysia for decades, should continue its current role in administering refugee affairs. The position reflects growing concerns among Malaysian leadership regarding the adequacy of existing mechanisms for managing the country's refugee population.

The comments underscore ongoing tensions between Malaysia's humanitarian obligations and domestic security and resource constraints. Malaysia hosts one of the largest refugee populations in Asia, with hundreds of thousands of individuals registered with or pending assessment by the UNHCR, placing significant strain on public services and infrastructure.

The sultan's intervention adds to broader policy discussions at federal level regarding immigration enforcement and refugee policy, matters that have assumed increased prominence in recent months amid concerns over undocumented migration and border security.
