Pakistan allocates $7.9m for Indus Waters mission amid budget cuts

Pakistan has earmarked $7.9 million in its budget allocation for the Indus Waters Commission, the international body overseeing the disputed water-sharing treaty between Islamabad and New Delhi, according to official budget documents. The figure includes approximately $6 million directed toward Hague arbitration proceedings and associated legal expenses, reflecting the escalating costs of the longstanding dispute with India over the waters of the Indus River system.

The budgetary commitment comes at a time when Pakistan is implementing severe austerity measures as part of its broader economic stabilization programme. The government has slashed discretionary spending across multiple sectors in an effort to reduce its fiscal deficit and meet international financial obligations.

Despite the constraints, Pakistan's allocation to the Indus Waters mission substantially exceeds the budgeted resources for flood-related recovery and mitigation efforts. Climate experts and development analysts have expressed concern that insufficient funding for flood preparedness could prove costly given Pakistan's vulnerability to monsoon-related disasters and climate change impacts.

The Indus Waters Treaty, signed in 1960 and considered a flagship accord of international cooperation, has faced mounting strain in recent years. Disputes over dam construction, water allocation, and environmental concerns have prompted both nations to seek arbitration and expert determination through international mechanisms, driving up associated legal and administrative costs.
