Pakistan Closes Airspace to Taiwan Airlines in Support of China

Pakistan has restricted access to its airspace for Taiwan-based airlines in an apparent show of solidarity with China's 'One China' policy, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif confirmed. The decision affects major Taiwanese carriers, including China Airlines and EVA Airways, which have been prohibited from flying over Pakistani territory since October 25.

The affected airlines have been compelled to adopt alternative flight routes, including paths that traverse Russian airspace, to maintain their international operations. This adjustment has extended flight times and added operational complexity for carriers serving routes traditionally passing through South Asian airspace.

The move reflects Pakistan's continued alignment with China on matters of strategic importance to Beijing. Pakistan and China have maintained close diplomatic and strategic ties, with China being a major investor in Pakistan through infrastructure projects including the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

The decision underscores the geopolitical dimensions of airspace access in Asia, where aviation routes often intersect with diplomatic positioning. For regional carriers and passengers, the restrictions represent a practical consequence of broader international relations dynamics affecting commercial aviation in South and Southeast Asia.
