Pakistan fails to match security pledges to Saudi Arabia against Houthi attacks

Pakistan has consistently reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Saudi Arabia from regional threats, yet has fallen short of providing comprehensive military assistance in the decade-long conflict with Houthi forces. The gap between diplomatic promises and operational involvement has become increasingly apparent as attacks by the Iran-backed militant group continue across Saudi territory.

Since 2015, when the Saudi-led coalition began military operations in Yemen, Pakistani leadership including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other senior officials have repeatedly pledged support for the kingdom's defense. However, these verbal commitments have not materialized into sustained and substantial military engagement on the ground.

The limited practical support contrasts sharply with Islamabad's rhetorical position as a close ally of Riyadh. Pakistan's maritime and aerial contributions have remained minimal compared to the scale of Houthi drone and missile strikes targeting Saudi infrastructure and population centers.

The disparity between words and actions raises questions about Pakistan's strategic priorities and capacity to honor security commitments to its Gulf allies. Saudi Arabia, which has significant economic leverage over Pakistan through oil credits and financial support, may be reassessing the reliability of its South Asian partner in confronting regional security challenges.

Analysts suggest Pakistan's reluctance to escalate involvement stems from concerns about retaliation from Iran-backed groups operating in Pakistani territory, as well as resource constraints within its military establishment. The situation underscores the complexity of Pakistan's balancing act between its Gulf allies and its regional security considerations.
