Pakistan imposes emergency rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, dissolves provincial government

President Asif Ali Zardari issued the emergency proclamation on Sunday, invoking Articles 232(1) and 234(1) of Pakistan's Constitution to assume federal control over the province. According to the presidential declaration, the action was necessitated by escalating terrorist attacks and a breakdown of constitutional machinery in the northwestern region.

Under the emergency order, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, provincial ministers, advisers, special assistants and the advocate general must immediately step down from their positions. The emergency framework grants Pakistan's federal government broad executive and legislative powers typically exercised at the provincial level during periods of security crisis or constitutional dysfunction.

The proclamation comes as Chief Minister Afridi has led ongoing protest demonstrations demanding the release of Imran Khan, the jailed founder of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, and access to medical facilities for the former premier. The province has faced mounting security challenges in recent months, particularly from militant organisations operating in the region.

The emergency declaration represents a significant consolidation of federal authority in a province already grappling with administrative and security complications. Such measures, while constitutionally permissible during crises, typically mark periods of heightened political tension and institutional disruption in Pakistan's federal structure.
