Pakistan's PTI vows to proceed with September 27 protest despite crackdown

Pakistan's main opposition party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has announced plans to hold a nationwide protest on September 27 to press for the release of party chief Imran Khan, vowing to proceed with demonstrations "at all costs" despite an ongoing crackdown by authorities.

Party officials have insisted the protest will go ahead despite a wave of arrests targeting senior PTI leaders in recent weeks. The government has stated it will not permit demonstrations to disrupt Islamabad, the capital, raising the prospect of confrontation between protesters and security forces.

Legally, PTI has moved courts challenging the detention of Khan's three sisters, arguing their incarceration is unlawful. Khan's son has condemned the detentions of his aunts and called for international attention to what he characterised as political persecution.

Imran Khan, the former prime minister, has been detained on various charges since his arrest last year. The September 27 action represents one of the party's largest mobilisation efforts since Khan's ouster from office, reflecting deepening tensions between the PTI and Pakistan's ruling establishment.

Authorities have warned that any attempt to breach security cordons or cause unrest in Islamabad will face strong response, signalling potential escalation as the planned protest date approaches.
