Pakistani gang allegedly exploits social media to target Indian youth

Investigators have uncovered a coordinated operation leveraging popular social media platforms to target vulnerable Indian youth, with suspected links to state-backed elements in Pakistan. The network employs sophisticated grooming tactics through Instagram, establishing false relationships with teenagers before attempting to extract personal information or compromising material for extortion purposes.

The modus operandi typically involves creating fake profiles using attractive photographs to gain the trust of young users. Once rapport is established, operators escalate contact to private messaging platforms and video calls, during which they attempt to capture compromising content or personal details that can be weaponized for blackmail demands.

Indian cybercrime and intelligence agencies have escalated their investigation into the network's operational structure and financing mechanisms. Preliminary findings suggest coordination with organized criminal elements and alleged patronage from institutional sources across the border, though officials remain cautious about attributing definitive responsibility pending further corroboration.

Security experts have advised parents and educators to increase digital literacy awareness among adolescents, emphasizing the dangers of engaging with unverified online contacts and the importance of privacy settings on social platforms. Authorities have urged victims and their families to report such incidents to local cybercrime cells and the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C).
