Palace rejects Padilla's comparison of confidential fund aliases to national heroes

MANILA — The Palace on Thursday rejected a comparison made by Senator Robin Padilla between aliases appearing in confidential fund documentation and the pseudonyms adopted by Philippine independence heroes, asserting the historical parallel does not hold merit.

Padilla raised the analogy during the 19th day of Vice President Sara Duterte's impeachment proceedings, suggesting that the use of assumed identities in sensitive government documents warranted similar historical recognition. However, administration officials countered that the motivations behind each use of pseudonyms were fundamentally different.

Malacañang's position stressed that Philippine heroes who adopted alternative identities did so in service of their country and independence struggle. By contrast, officials contended that individuals allegedly using fictitious names in confidential fund receipts may have done so to conceal their identities for personal financial gain or to obscure the movement of government resources.

The dispute highlights deepening tensions in the impeachment trial, which has centered on questions regarding the Vice President's use of confidential funds and the transparency of related documentation. The Senate continues hearing arguments from both sides as the high-profile trial progresses.
