Palestinian death toll in Gaza exceeds 74,000 since conflict onset

Gaza's Health Ministry said the Palestinian death toll has reached 74,016, with an additional 175,068 people wounded since the conflict erupted on October 7, 2023. The war began when Hamas-led militants launched a major incursion into Israel, resulting in approximately 1,200 Israeli deaths, predominantly civilians, and the capture of 251 hostages.
The ministry, part of the Hamas-led administration in Gaza, maintains detailed casualty records that are generally regarded as reliable by United Nations agencies and international organisations. The data does not distinguish between civilian and combatant deaths.
Although a ceasefire took effect on October 10, hostilities have not entirely ceased. The Health Ministry reported that 1,145 Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire agreement took hold. Israeli military operations have continued, with authorities attributing strikes to responses against identified threats or attacks.
The prolonged conflict has created a severe humanitarian crisis in the densely populated territory. International organisations have expressed concern over the scale of casualties and the ongoing displacement of the Palestinian population throughout the nearly three-year war.
