Panama struck by most powerful earthquake in 75 years

The earthquake struck Herrera Province, located more than 193 kilometres southwest of the Panama Canal, unleashing powerful seismic waves across the region. The initial 7.7-magnitude quake was the most significant to impact Panama since 1949, according to seismic records.

Following the main tremor, authorities documented a substantial 6.6-magnitude aftershock, along with eight additional earthquakes measuring 4.8 or higher on the Richter scale. The succession of strong aftershocks raised concerns among residents and prompted precautionary measures across populated areas.

The exact extent of damage and any injuries remained under assessment as officials surveyed the affected areas. The distant location of the epicentre from major population centres may have limited immediate impact, though the powerful tremors were felt across Panama and neighbouring regions.

Panama's geographical position on the boundary of tectonic plates makes it susceptible to periodic seismic activity, though earthquakes of this magnitude remain relatively infrequent. Authorities urged residents to remain vigilant for potential aftershocks in the coming days.
