Panel backs industry status for Kerala's private bus operators

A high-level committee in Kerala has recommended that private bus operators be granted industry status under the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) category, opening the door to substantial financial and technical support.

Headed by K. Padmakumar, a former Transport Commissioner and retired IPS officer, the expert panel assessed the operational challenges faced by private bus operators in the state. The committee's findings suggest that formal industry recognition would be transformative for the sector's financial health and service quality.

Under the proposed framework, private bus operators would gain eligibility for bank loans on more favourable terms, access to technical assistance programmes, and financial incentives for fleet modernisation. These measures are designed to enable operators to upgrade ageing vehicles, improve safety standards, and enhance passenger amenities across Kerala's inter-city and suburban transport network.

The recommendation comes amid persistent financial pressures on private bus operators in Kerala, who have struggled with rising operational costs and competition from other transport modes. Industry classification would position the sector for structured growth and investment, potentially strengthening the state's overall transport infrastructure and connectivity.

The committee's proposal is expected to be reviewed by the state government for implementation, with potential benefits extending beyond individual operators to the broader travelling public reliant on private bus services across Kerala.
