Panel convenes to modernise Sri Lanka's prison regulations and procedures

The special committee tasked with reviewing and updating the prison framework established under the Prisons Ordinance convened for the first time at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday afternoon, marking the formal commencement of its mandate.

The committee's appointment follows discussions between President Dissanayake and representatives of the three Buddhist Nikayas, reflecting an institutional effort to modernise the nation's correctional system and its regulatory mechanisms.

The comprehensive review will encompass existing rules, regulations and standing orders currently governing prison operations across the country. The committee's work is expected to address contemporary practices and standards within the correctional system.

The establishment of the panel represents part of broader efforts by the Presidential administration to strengthen institutional frameworks and ensure alignment with current governance priorities. The committee is expected to present recommendations as part of its ongoing review process.
