Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has accused the opposition Workers' Party of adjusting its political positions in response to changing public sentiment, rather than maintaining consistent principles on major policy matters.
Speaking on the importance of strategic consistency, Wong pointed to the handling of housing and foreign manpower as illustrative examples where positions have appeared to fluctuate. He suggested that such shifts reflected reactive rather than proactive policymaking.
Wong emphasised that the People's Action Party, as the governing administration, must take a wider and more sustained view when addressing complex national challenges. This approach, he indicated, requires maintaining policy frameworks that balance immediate public concerns with longer-term national interests.
The comments underscore ongoing tensions between Singapore's ruling party and the Workers' Party, the dominant opposition voice in Parliament. Housing affordability and foreign worker intake remain contentious issues in local politics, with both topics regularly generating public debate and policy scrutiny.
