PUTRAJAYA — The Federal Pardons Board has postponed its decision on former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's clemency application, according to sources close to the proceedings.
The deferment signals that the board requires additional time to thoroughly examine the application from the former leader, who was convicted in 2020 of abuse of power and money laundering related to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.
Najib's legal team submitted the clemency petition seeking a pardon or sentence reduction from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Malaysia's constitutional monarch who has the authority to grant royal pardons under Article 36 of the Federal Constitution.
The postponement reflects the complexity and sensitivity surrounding the case, which has captured public attention given Najib's prominent political status and the scale of the financial improprieties involved in the 1MDB affair.
No new date has been announced for when the Pardons Board will reconvene to make its determination on the clemency application.
