Parel Church elevated to basilica status in Kerala archdiocese

The religious landmark, previously operating as the Parel Marian Pilgrimage Centre, has received its new ecclesiastical designation following official recognition by the archdiocese authorities. The elevation reflects the church's significance as a pilgrimage destination and its role within the Catholic community in the region.

Basilica status represents a formal recognition by the Catholic Church of a sanctuary's historical, spiritual, and pastoral importance. The redesignation places the shrine among significant Catholic places of worship, enhancing its standing within the archdiocese's institutional framework.

The Changanassery archdiocese, located in Kerala's Kottayam district, now has two basilicas following this elevation. The formal renaming to Marth Mariam Immaculate Conception Shrine Basilica connects the shrine to Marian devotion traditions prevalent in the region's Catholic communities.

The basilica designation underscores the church's role in serving pilgrims and devotees, reinforcing its position as a key religious centre in South India. The move is expected to facilitate increased pastoral activities and strengthen the archdiocese's religious infrastructure.
