The parents of Ankita Bhandari, the receptionist whose death sparked significant controversy in Uttarakhand, have formally requested the CBI to conduct narco-analysis examinations on key suspects in the case. During a meeting with investigating officers, the family pressed for the administration of the psychological interrogation technique on former BJP MLA Suresh Rathore and actress Urmila Sanawar, according to sources familiar with the development.
Narco-analysis, though controversial, involves administering drugs to lower inhibitions and potentially reveal information that suspects may otherwise withhold. The technique remains legally permissible in India only when conducted with a suspect's consent and under stringent safeguards established by the Supreme Court.
Bhandari's death in February 2022 drew widespread public attention and raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the 19-year-old's drowning at a resort owned by Rathore. The case has since become emblematic of broader concerns regarding safety and accountability in Uttarakhand's hospitality sector.
The CBI has been investigating the case, and the family's request for narco-tests reflects their persistence in seeking answers. Officials indicated that any such examinations would be undertaken according to established legal procedures and with appropriate consent from the individuals involved.
