The Sectoral Oversight Committee on Infrastructure and Strategic Development has instructed officials to launch a formal investigation into service delays affecting Sri Lanka's motor vehicle registration system. The committee, chaired by MP S. M. Marikkar, convened at Parliament to address mounting concerns about the Department of Motor Traffic's inability to process applications within acceptable timeframes.

The directive requires officials to conduct a comprehensive review of the factors contributing to the delays and to identify systemic bottlenecks within the department. The investigation is expected to examine operational procedures, staffing levels, and resource allocation to determine where improvements can be made.

Officials have been instructed to submit detailed findings and recommendations to the committee. The inquiry follows sustained complaints from the public and transport sector stakeholders regarding extended wait times for both vehicle registration plates and driving licence issuance, issues that have reportedly hampered business operations and created public inconvenience.

The committee's intervention reflects parliamentary concern about service delivery standards at a key government department responsible for regulating motor vehicle operations across the country.
