Parliamentary probe into 1983 Black July tragedy proposed

A proposal calling for the establishment of a Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) to conduct an in-depth investigation into the 1983 Black July riots and their consequences was formally submitted to Parliament on Wednesday. The proposal was introduced by National People's Power (NPP) MP Thanura Dissanayake and co-sponsored by fellow NPP MP Bhagya Sri Herath.

The proposed select committee is intended to undertake a comprehensive study of the Black July violence, which occurred during a critical period in Sri Lanka's post-independence history. The committee would examine the circumstances surrounding the riots, their immediate impact on affected communities, and their long-term consequences for the nation.

Parliamentary select committees are tasked with investigating matters of national significance and submitting findings and recommendations to Parliament for consideration. The establishment of such a committee would require parliamentary approval and would represent an official legislative effort to examine this significant historical event.

The proposal reflects ongoing efforts within Parliament to address historical grievances and examine pivotal moments in Sri Lanka's past. The submission of the proposal marks the beginning of parliamentary procedures that would determine whether the proposed committee receives approval to proceed with its investigation.
