PAS demands transparency over Zakir Naik extradition negotiations

The Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) has urged the government to provide detailed information about ongoing extradition discussions involving controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, expressing concern that Malaysia's legal framework could be sacrificed to strengthen bilateral relations with India.

Party secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the matter raises serious questions about the rule of law and Malaysia's commitment to legal independence. He cautioned against using high-profile cases as bargaining chips in international diplomacy, emphasizing that judicial decisions must remain insulated from political considerations.

The call comes as Malaysia faces mounting diplomatic pressure from New Delhi regarding Naik, who fled India in 2016 and has been residing in Malaysia. Indian authorities have sought his extradition on charges related to alleged hate speech and incitement, allegations Naik has consistently denied.
