PAS official told to avoid interfering in Sabah, Sarawak matters

A senior opposition coalition figure has called on PAS to refrain from meddling in the internal affairs of Sabah and Sarawak, warning that such interference risks damaging ties between the East Malaysian states and Putrajaya.

The Gagasan Rakyat vice-president levelled the criticism at PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari, asserting that his recent statements appeared designed to sow enmity between Borneo's two largest states and the federal administration.

The rebuke underscores ongoing tensions within Malaysia's political landscape regarding federal-state relations, particularly concerning the autonomous status and governance structures of Sabah and Sarawak under the Malaysia Agreement 1963.

PAS, a key component of the Perikatan Nasional coalition, has faced scrutiny in recent months over its positions on various national and regional matters. The party has not yet publicly responded to the accusations.

The dispute highlights the delicate balance Malaysian political parties must maintain when addressing East Malaysian concerns, given the constitutional protections afforded to Sabah and Sarawak and their significance in national coalition-building.
