PAS queries India extradition commitment on Zakir Naik case
Malaysia's Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party has questioned whether New Delhi has agreed to extradite controversial preacher Zakir Naik, insisting that bilateral ties must not override the country's extradition laws.

The party's secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan raised concerns about Malaysia's obligations under extradition agreements, saying that efforts to strengthen relations with India should not compromise legal frameworks.
The remarks come amid ongoing scrutiny of India's position on Zakir Naik, the Indian-born Islamic preacher who has been based in Malaysia since 2016. The televangelist faces legal cases in India related to money laundering and incitement allegations, which he has denied.
Takiyuddin stressed that Malaysia must uphold its extradition laws and international commitments, regardless of diplomatic considerations with New Delhi. He called for clarity on whether any formal commitment regarding Naik's extradition had been secured during high-level talks between the two nations.
The issue reflects broader tensions over Naik's presence in Malaysia, where he has established a significant following through his Islamic teachings. His legal status in the country has periodically drawn attention from various political quarters and diplomatic channels.
Neither the Malaysian government nor Indian authorities have made official statements directly addressing the party's latest queries on the extradition matter.
