PAS should contest alone in GE16, says former Kota Bharu MP Zaid
Former Kota Bharu MP Zaid Ibrahim has urged PAS to abandon its coalition with Barisan Nasional, arguing that the Islamic party can secure up to 60 parliamentary seats independently while questioning BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's sincerity.

Zaid Ibrahim, who previously represented Kota Bharu, has called on PAS to pursue a standalone strategy for the upcoming general election rather than remaining tied to the Barisan Nasional coalition. According to Zaid, the Islamic party possesses sufficient electoral strength to achieve significant parliamentary representation without relying on coalition partners.
The former MP expressed doubts about the commitment of BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to a genuine working relationship with PAS. Zaid contended that Zahid's overtures towards the Islamist party lack authenticity and may not serve PAS's long-term interests.
Zaid's assessment suggests that PAS could capture approximately 60 parliamentary seats if it contests the general election independently, indicating substantial electoral potential within its core support base. This projection implies that the party need not depend on BN's machinery or resources to achieve meaningful electoral success.
The call for PAS to strike out independently represents a significant departure from current coalition arrangements and reflects broader political realignments within Malaysia's fractured political landscape. Whether PAS will heed such calls remains uncertain, as the party weighs the strategic advantages and disadvantages of coalition politics against standalone candidacy.
