PAS-Umno alliance in Melaka remains solid despite NS row
An analyst says the Islamic party views its cooperation with Umno as strategically important and shows no signs of breaking ranks. The assessment comes as tensions over the National Service issue simmer in the state.

The political alliance between PAS and Umno in Melaka is expected to weather recent disagreements over the National Service (NS) programme, according to political observers. Despite public differences on the contentious issue, analysts believe the two parties remain committed to their coalition arrangement in the state.
Mazlan Ali, a political analyst at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, said PAS continues to view cooperation with Umno as crucial to maintaining its political position in Melaka. The Islamic party has given no indication of distancing itself from the partnership, he noted, despite the friction that the NS debate has created between them.
The NS dispute has highlighted fault lines within the ruling coalition, with the two parties staking out different positions on the government's mandatory service initiative. However, observers suggest the disagreement reflects tactical positioning rather than a fundamental breakdown in the partnership.
Such tensions are common in multi-party coalitions, where partners must balance their own political interests with broader alliance objectives. For both PAS and Umno, maintaining their Melaka arrangement remains advantageous, providing each with legislative numbers and state-level influence. The partnership, which has anchored state politics in recent years, is likely to persist despite periodic disputes over specific policies.
