Pastor Jerome case adjourned as CID investigation continues

Colombo Fort Magistrate Pasan Amaraseena has ordered that the case against Frederick Christopher Jerome Fernando, also known as Pastor Jerome, be recalled on 3 March 2027. The adjournment was granted after the Criminal Investigation Department informed the court that its investigation into the allegations remains ongoing and requires further time for completion.

Fernando faces accusations related to statements alleged to have compromised religious harmony. The nature and specifics of the statements have not been detailed in court proceedings to date.

The postponement represents a significant delay in the case, which will now remain inactive for several months. The adjournment is standard practice in Sri Lankan courts when investigative agencies require extended periods to gather evidence and complete their inquiries before prosecution proceedings advance.

The case is one of several in Sri Lanka involving allegations related to religious speech and communal tensions. Courts have increasingly examined cases involving statements claimed to undermine harmony between different faith communities on the island.

Magistrate Amaraseena's order ensures that the investigation can proceed without time constraints, with the matter scheduled to resume in the first quarter of 2027.
