A court in Patna has convicted a man under the Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act and related provisions, sentencing him to two years in jail for violations related to instant triple talaq. The court imposed a fine of ₹6,500 on the convict, Ahmed, with an additional provision of one month and 22 days of imprisonment in the event of default on payment of the fine. The conviction marks another instance of courts applying the stringent anti-triple talaq provisions that have been in effect across India since the Instant Triple Talaq Act came into force in 2019. Under the law, pronouncing triple talaq—the practice of divorcing by uttering "talaq" three times in succession—is criminalized and can attract imprisonment and fines. The judgment underscores the judicial system's commitment to implementing provisions designed to protect the rights of Muslim women and ensure they are not subject to instant and irrevocable divorce.
