Pawar calls for taluka-wise drought assessment, ₹50,000 hectare aid

Senior politician Sharad Pawar on Wednesday demanded that the Maharashtra government adopt a more nuanced approach to drought declaration and relief distribution in the state. Pawar called for taluka-wise evaluation of rainfall patterns, soil moisture levels, and actual crop damage before triggering drought declarations. This granular approach, he contended, would provide a more accurate picture of which farming communities genuinely require state intervention.

The veteran politician has also advocated for enhanced relief measures, specifically recommending a compensation package of ₹50,000 per hectare for affected farmers. He emphasized that relief payouts should be calibrated to reflect ground-level realities rather than administrative convenience.

The call comes amid reports of erratic monsoon patterns and crop failure across multiple talukas in Maharashtra's agricultural heartland. Pawar's intervention signals growing pressure on the state government to revisit its drought assessment criteria and ensure relief reaches the most vulnerable farming households.
