Paya Terubong landslide site requires continuous monitoring, warns MBPP
Penang's municipal authorities have stressed the need for ongoing vigilance at the Paya Terubong landslide site, cautioning that extended wet weather could destabilise soil conditions and trigger further incidents despite current stability.

Kuala Lumpur — Officials in Penang have flagged the Paya Terubong landslide site as requiring close, sustained monitoring in the coming weeks as weather patterns remain unpredictable across the region.
Mayor A Rajendran told reporters that while soil conditions have stabilised since recent rainfall subsided, prolonged or intensive precipitation could compromise ground integrity and create fresh movement risks. The caution comes despite the absence of visible signs of additional instability at the site in recent days.
"Extended rainfall has the potential to weaken soil structure and increase vulnerability to fresh landslides," Rajendran said, underlining the need for continued observation protocols. The Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang (MBPP) has indicated it will maintain enhanced surveillance of the affected area through the approaching monsoon season.
Authorities have not reported any casualties or further structural damage since the initial incident. Residents in surrounding areas have been advised to remain alert and report any visible changes in ground stability or unusual water seepage to local emergency services immediately.
The monitoring programme forms part of broader landslide risk management across Penang's hilly districts, where seasonal rainfall frequently triggers ground movement.
