Peace gains at risk if gov't-MILF accord left incomplete

MANILA — Progress toward a lasting peace settlement in Mindanao faces jeopardy unless the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front move swiftly to complete their agreement, according to political analysts.

Yasmira Moner, a political scientist at Mindanao State University, cautioned that unfinished elements of the peace pact risk unraveling the gains achieved during years of negotiations. The warning reflects growing concerns among peace advocates that momentum may be flagging as key signings remain pending.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has not yet scheduled a meeting with MILF Chairman Al Haj Murad Ebrahim to formally sign the agreement, a critical step that would cement commitments on both sides. The delay has raised questions about the administration's commitment to completing the peace framework.

The peace process between the government and the MILF has spanned decades, with the militant group renouncing its independence struggle in favor of autonomy arrangements for Muslim-majority Mindanao. Experts emphasize that maintaining political will and momentum is essential to ensure the agreement's implementation and prevent a return to conflict.
