Peasant groups seek CHR inquiry into KMP leader harassment

MANILA — A peasant advocacy network has escalated calls for a formal investigation into alleged harassment of a prominent farmer organization leader, asking the country's human rights body to look into the incident.
Tanggol Magsasaka filed the complaint with the Commission on Human Rights on Friday, citing what it described as surveillance and harassment activities targeting Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas chair Danilo Ramos in Malolos, Bulacan during the previous week.
According to the complaint, six men dressed in civilian clothes were involved in the alleged incidents. The peasant group contended that the activities constituted human rights violations and sought the CHR's intervention to determine the circumstances and parties responsible.
The complaint underscores ongoing tensions between agricultural worker groups and authorities over land disputes and rural issues that have frequently sparked confrontations in various provinces. The CHR, as the constitutionally mandated independent body tasked with investigating human rights violations, is expected to review the complaint and determine appropriate action.
