Jessica Pegula secured her place in the fourth round of the US Open on Friday, staging a comeback victory over Canada's Leylah Fernandez at the New York tennis championship. The third-seeded American recovered from dropping the opening set to prevail 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 and maintain her Grand Slam aspirations.
Pegula's resilience proved decisive after Fernandez dominated the first set. The American steadied her game in the second set, breaking through Fernandez's defence to level the match before securing the final set with a dominant performance.
Both players arrived at Flushing Meadows with pedigree at the US Open. Fernandez, who reached the final of the tournament in 2021, could not replicate that form against Pegula's improved play. The victory represents another significant milestone for Pegula in her pursuit of a first Grand Slam singles title.
