Pegula's progression to the last four came after a closely contested battle that saw momentum swing between the two American players throughout the afternoon session. The opening set went to the top seed relatively smoothly before Anisimova levelled proceedings by taking the second set decisively, forcing a decisive third frame.
The final set proved to be the most dramatic, with both players exchanging breaks and holding firm on their service games. Unable to be separated through regulation play, the pair moved to a tiebreak where Pegula's experience proved decisive. She converted her opportunity at 7-6(4) to seal a place in the semi-finals of the prestigious hard court tournament.
The Cincinnati Open continues to showcase competitive American tennis, with Pegula's victory keeping at least one homegrown talent in contention for the title. Her semi-final opponent will be determined as matches progress through the latter stages of the draw.
