GEORGE TOWN — Residents in certain areas of Penang island faced unhealthy air conditions on Thursday as pollution levels climbed significantly, according to a statement from the state executive council.
The Air Pollutant Index recorded a reading of 142 in the affected areas, crossing the threshold from moderate to unhealthy air quality. An API reading between 101 and 200 is classified as unhealthy and poses health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups including children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.
The state authorities did not immediately specify the cause of the air quality deterioration or identify which parts of the island were most severely affected. However, the spike underscores ongoing air quality challenges in the region.
Healthcare officials typically advise the public to limit outdoor activities and wear protective masks during periods of unhealthy air quality. The Malaysian government's Environmental Quality Division monitors air quality across the country and issues regular updates to inform public health decisions.
