GEORGE TOWN — Penang state authorities and Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) are stepping up coordination to expand international flight connectivity at Penang International Airport, leveraging ongoing terminal expansion works to attract new carriers and routes.

The strengthened partnership comes as the Penang International Airport (PIA) development programme advances, with infrastructure enhancements designed to increase passenger capacity and operational efficiency. Officials are actively engaging with airlines to position the airport as a competitive hub for regional and international travel in the northern corridor.

The expansion initiative reflects Penang's broader economic strategy to boost air connectivity and support tourism and business travel. MAHB's investment in airport infrastructure is expected to enhance the facility's ability to accommodate larger aircraft and accommodate increased passenger volumes, making it more attractive to international carriers seeking entry into Malaysian markets.

State and airport management are prioritising discussions with airlines regarding new routes from key regional and international destinations. The timing of the infrastructure improvements is intended to provide airlines with modern facilities that meet contemporary operational standards.

Officials have indicated that successful route expansion would generate economic benefits through increased visitor arrivals and enhanced freight and logistics capabilities at the airport.
