Penang DAP lawmaker urges deferral of fee and tariff increases

KUALA LUMPUR — Lim Guan Eng, the DAP assemblyman for Air Putih, has appealed to the Penang state administration to defer multiple utility and property-related fee increases, arguing that households and businesses require relief during challenging economic times.
The legislator's call comes as the state government prepares to implement adjustments to assessment fees, quit rent charges and water tariffs. Lim contended that advancing these increases would place undue strain on residents already grappling with rising living costs.
In his statement, Lim suggested that the Penang government should follow the example of deferring such measures to provide temporary respite to the community. The request reflects broader concerns among opposition lawmakers regarding the impact of successive cost-of-living increases on ordinary Malaysians.
The Penang state government has not yet responded to the proposal. The timing of any fee adjustments remains a key consideration for state authorities balancing revenue requirements with public sentiment.
