Penang developer halts condo project following fatal Paya Terubong landslide

The Penang City Council has imposed a halt on a residential condominium project in the Paya Terubong area following a fatal landslide incident at the site. The decision comes as authorities move to prevent further loss of life and assess the geological risks associated with the development.

In response to the suspension, the project developer has been directed to undertake immediate mitigation measures to stabilise the affected area and prevent additional slope failures. These emergency works are expected to address the most critical safety concerns identified following the landslide.

Beyond immediate remedial action, the developer must also prepare and submit a fresh environmental impact study covering the affected locality. The comprehensive assessment will be required to determine the site's suitability for continued development and identify any additional geological or environmental constraints.

The suspension reflects heightened scrutiny of construction projects in hilly terrain across Penang, where landslides have periodically posed risks to both residents and development sites. Authorities have indicated that the condo project will only be permitted to resume once all safety protocols have been satisfied and the new environmental study has been reviewed and approved.
