GEORGE TOWN — The Penang state government is conducting a conceptual design study for the proposed Third Link crossing, exploring a bridge structure as an alternative to the previously considered undersea tunnel option.
The shift in approach reflects ongoing efforts to identify the most viable solution for improving connectivity between Penang Island and the mainland. Officials are evaluating technical feasibility, environmental impact, and cost-effectiveness of both proposed methodologies.
As part of the consultation process, state authorities will seek feedback from the port commission to ensure the selected option aligns with maritime interests and shipping operations in the Penang Strait. This engagement is considered critical given the strategic importance of the waters surrounding the proposed crossing.
The Third Link project remains a long-standing infrastructure initiative aimed at reducing traffic congestion on existing crossings and enhancing regional economic connectivity. The state government has not announced a timeline for concluding the design study or making a final decision on which approach to pursue.
Further details on project costs, construction schedules, and funding mechanisms are expected to emerge once the conceptual design phase is completed and stakeholder consultations are concluded.
