Penang ferry operators offer free rides for Deepavali celebration

GEORGE TOWN — Port authorities in Penang are marking Deepavali with a gesture of goodwill, offering free ferry rides to Malaysian citizens across the state's waterways on November 8.

The initiative, jointly announced by the Penang Port Commission (PPC) and Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB), comes as the region celebrates the Festival of Lights, one of the most significant occasions in the Hindu calendar. The move is intended to facilitate travel and reduce transportation costs for residents and visitors during the festive season.

The complimentary ferry service will operate across established routes serving the Penang area. Port officials said the arrangement reflects the commitment of the port authorities to support community celebrations and promote accessibility during major cultural festivities.

Deepavali, celebrated annually by Hindu, Sikh, and Buddhist communities across Malaysia, typically involves family gatherings, temple visits, and festive activities. By removing ferry fare barriers, the authorities aim to enable easier movement across Penang's waterways during this important cultural occasion.

Commuters are advised to check with port authorities for specific routes and operating schedules on the designated day to plan their travel accordingly.
