GEORGE TOWN — Ferry services operating across Penang waters have experienced robust growth, with passenger traffic climbing 7.28 per cent during the first six months of 2026, according to the Penang Port Commission.

The expansion reflects growing confidence in the state's maritime transport network and increased utilization of services connecting key destinations across the Strait of Malacca. Officials attributed the rise to improved service reliability and enhanced passenger amenities across the ferry fleet.

In recognition of Malaysia's National Day celebrations, the port authority announced a special promotional initiative offering complimentary ferry rides during the Merdeka period. The gesture is intended to encourage greater public engagement with the services and boost ridership during the festive season.

The commission's performance figures suggest the ferry network continues to play a significant role in Penang's public transportation infrastructure. The service handles thousands of daily commuters and tourists, providing critical connectivity for the state's economic activities and residential communities across its coastal regions.
