The Penang state government has clarified that RM100,000 spent on an Egypt trip came from the administrative budget of a state agency, not from zakat funds. The denial comes after embezzlement claims surfaced regarding the expenditure.

The Penang government has moved to dispel allegations of zakat fund misappropriation, asserting that monies used for an Egypt trip were sourced from a different budget allocation. A Deputy Chief Minister stated that the RM100,000 in question originated from the administrative budget of MAINPP, a state-linked entity, rather than from zakat reserves. The clarification addresses concerns raised about the proper use of Islamic alms funds, which are subject to strict regulatory oversight in Malaysia. State authorities emphasised that zakat collections remain segregated and are managed in accordance with Islamic financing principles and state regulations. The government has not indicated whether it plans further investigations into how the administrative funds were allocated or the purpose of the Egypt trip.
