Penang housing project at landslide-prone site saw multiple revisions
A residential development in a geologically unstable area of Penang has undergone numerous design changes and developer switches since its original approval, state officials disclosed. The project, initially greenlit under a previous administration, has been modified several times over the years.

Penang's state executive councillor H'ng Mooi Lye revealed that the housing development was first approved during the Gerakan-led government era. The project site, located in an area susceptible to landslides, has undergone considerable alterations to its original plans throughout its development timeline.
The councillor told the state assembly that the project experienced multiple modifications, including changes to the development scheme itself as well as shifts in project developers. These alterations reflect the evolving nature of the development process over several years.
The disclosure comes amid ongoing scrutiny of development practices in geologically sensitive areas across Penang. The state has faced increasing concerns about building projects in zones prone to landslides and other natural hazards, particularly following heavy rainfall events that have triggered ground movements in various localities.
State officials have been examining the approval processes and oversight mechanisms for residential projects in vulnerable geological zones. The housing scheme represents one of several developments in the region that have drawn attention to questions about land use planning and risk assessment in areas designated as landslide-prone.
