GEORGE TOWN — The Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) has completed a comprehensive assessment of flash flood hotspots across the state, pinpointing 51 high-risk locations that require heightened monitoring during the monsoon season.
The identification of these vulnerable zones represents a significant step in Penang's monsoon preparedness strategy. Department officials said the mapped areas encompass low-lying regions, drainage-prone localities, and areas with historical flooding patterns that are expected to face elevated risks during heavy rainfall periods.
The Fire and Rescue Department indicated that the identification exercise will enable more efficient deployment of emergency response resources and facilitate better coordination with other relevant agencies. Officials emphasized that the initiative aims to minimize disruption to residents and infrastructure during the monsoon months, which typically bring intense rainfall to the region.
State authorities have urged residents in identified hotspots to remain vigilant and maintain awareness of evacuation routes. The department has also called on community leaders and local governments to conduct their own preparedness drills and ensure drainage systems are functioning optimally ahead of the monsoon season.
The monsoon preparedness efforts align with broader regional initiatives to enhance disaster management capabilities in response to increasingly unpredictable weather patterns affecting Malaysia and Southeast Asia.
