Penang medical tourism surges with 285,400 visitors in H1 2026

Penang has solidified its position as a leading medical tourism destination in Southeast Asia, welcoming 285,400 medical tourists during the first six months of 2026 and generating RM601.8 million in revenue, state officials reported Tuesday.

The visitor numbers reflect strong growth in the sector, which has become increasingly important to Penang's economy. The state's competitive healthcare services, modern medical facilities, and cost advantages compared to developed nations have made it an attractive destination for patients seeking surgical procedures, dental treatments, and specialized care.

Medical tourism represents a significant revenue stream for Penang, complementing its traditional tourism offerings. The influx of medical visitors has also boosted related economic activity, including hospitality, transportation, and retail sectors that support the medical traveler demographic.

State authorities have attributed the sector's performance to continued investment in healthcare infrastructure and marketing efforts to promote Penang's medical services internationally.
