Penang pig farms adopt biogas solution to curb odour and pollution

GEORGE TOWN — Pig farms operating in Kampung Selamat, Tasek Gelugor, have implemented a waste management system that directs animal effluent to a biogas plant, according to a Penang state executive councillor.

The initiative tackles two persistent problems that have affected the residential community: foul odours emanating from the farms and water pollution in nearby waterways. The biogas facility processes the livestock waste, reducing environmental impact while generating energy as a byproduct of the treatment process.

The move represents a coordinated effort among the farming community to address long-standing complaints from neighbouring residents regarding sanitation and environmental quality. The biogas technology converts organic waste into usable energy, offering both an environmental and economic benefit to the participating farms.

State officials have indicated that the scheme represents progress in balancing agricultural operations with residential welfare in the densely populated area. The implementation of such waste management solutions aligns with Penang's broader sustainability initiatives and environmental protection standards.

The state government has been monitoring the effectiveness of the biogas plant in mitigating odour complaints and improving water quality in the vicinity.
