Penang road closure extended as damaged pipe triggers Bayan Baru sinkhole

GEORGE TOWN, Oct 30 — State authorities in Penang have pinpointed a damaged 750-millimetre concrete pipe as the cause of a sinkhole that has disrupted traffic in Bayan Baru, requiring an extended road closure for repairs.

The Penang State Executive Councillor announced the findings following investigations into the subsidence incident, which compromised structural integrity of the roadway. The pipe deterioration necessitated immediate intervention to prevent further ground settlement and ensure public safety.

Repair works are expected to continue until November 7, during which the affected section will remain closed to traffic. Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes while restoration efforts proceed.

The incident highlights ongoing infrastructure maintenance challenges in the state, as ageing utility networks require regular monitoring and rehabilitation. State authorities said they would conduct additional assessments of similar installations in the vicinity to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
