GEORGE TOWN: Penang's ambitious Silicon Island project is moving forward with construction of its primary access route, a RM420 million link road designed to connect the island with the mainland. The initiative aims to deliver its first bridge opening by 2028, marking a significant milestone in the state's infrastructure development strategy.
Reclamation work at Silicon Island has already reached 202.3 hectares, providing the foundation for the planned commercial and industrial development. The link road project represents a critical component of Penang's broader economic diversification efforts, positioning the island to accommodate new business ventures and create employment opportunities in the region.
The infrastructure development is expected to unlock Silicon Island's potential as a major economic hub for Penang and attract regional investment. Once completed, the link road will provide efficient connectivity between the island and existing road networks, facilitating the movement of goods and personnel.
State authorities have indicated that the project is progressing according to schedule, though officials have not disclosed additional construction phases or timelines beyond the initial bridge completion target. The development reflects Penang's commitment to modernising its infrastructure in response to evolving economic demands.
