Penang's water security strengthens as Sungai Muda barrage nears completion

The Sungai Muda barrage project is progressing toward its targeted completion date in mid-2027, representing a significant step forward in securing water supplies for both Penang and Kedah during dry seasons.

The facility is designed to regulate water flow and improve storage capacity, addressing longstanding concerns about water availability during periods of low rainfall. By capturing and managing river discharge, the barrage will provide both states with greater flexibility in meeting demand during drought conditions.

Water security has been a critical issue for the northern region, particularly during the annual dry season when river levels drop significantly. The new barrage is expected to mitigate these challenges by ensuring more consistent water availability throughout the year.

The project reflects ongoing efforts by regional authorities to strengthen infrastructure and support growing population and industrial demands. Upon completion, the barrage will join existing water management systems in providing a more resilient supply network for the two states and their residents.
